About Us

  • The Compost Advisory Council (CAC) Steering Committee is unusual in that we are made up of competitors who are mutually supportive.

  • We are a mix of commercial producers, government entities, regulators, backyard composters and tree-huggers.

  • What holds us together are a few over-riding ideals including a strong environmental ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • We know that compost is a beneficial product - that it plays an important role in creating a healthy environment for plant, animal, and human life.

  • We promote new beneficial applications for compost, including stormwater management and erosion control, exhaust air filtration ("bio-filters"), and soil remediation.

  • We actively promote the economic and environmental advantages of compost over "unnatural" products that treat the symptoms of a problem while aggravating the underlying cause.

  • We teach homeowners, gardeners, landscapers, and managers of public land that compost usage can boost soil fertility while also conserving water, reducing chemical run-off, stimulating the local economy, and minimizing the mounting costs of burying more than 20 million tons of organic matter in Texas landfills every year.

  • By influencing people to make, buy, and use compost, we help to create a demand that leads to a commercial market, which spawns and expands commercial scale composting and mulching businesses. We have some of the best represented on our Steering Committee and we all benefit from their experience in cutting production costs while increasing the value of their products.

  • We are dedicated to the idea that environmental stewardship and economic development come together in composting, and work together to raise the profile of the composting industry through good business practices, practical rules and regulations, and grassroots initiatives.
